Wawatatia is a poignant slow melody piece written for cornet soloist, commissioned by Anthony Smith for his performances in the Canterbury Slow Melody Contest and the New Zealand National Invitational Slow Melody Competition.

The title Wawatatia means “to dream for, to hope for, or to desire something to be.” Composed during the global Covid-19 pandemic, the work reflects a time of deep internal reflection amidst worldwide challenges. It embodies a spirit of resilience, encouraging not to dwell on past hardships but to look forward with hope and aspiration for a better future.

Subtly woven throughout the piece are quotations from Eric Ball’s Resurgam, symbolizing the shared hope and renewal we all seek in uncertain times.
