Dale Vail

Trombonist - Composer - Conductor

Dale Vail is a trombonist, composer, and conductor whose work sits at the intersection of contemporary brass band writing, orchestral performance, and music education. His music is performed regularly by bands across Australia and New Zealand, with a particular focus on repertoire that is idiomatic, practical, and musically substantial.

Dale studied at the New Zealand School of Music, graduating with First Class Honours, and later undertook postgraduate study at the Australian National Academy of Music. During his studies he was awarded the Director of Music’s Choice Scholarship in his opening year and was deeply involved in the New Zealand brass band and orchestral communities, including the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band, Orchestra Wellington, and the Wellington Brass Band.

As a composer, Dale is particularly known for his contributions to the British-style brass band repertoire, with works ranging from major contest-length compositions to accessible educational pieces. His writing is informed by extensive experience as both a performer and conductor, ensuring music that is effective in rehearsal, rewarding in performance, and grounded in a practical understanding of ensembles at all levels.

As a soloist, Dale has received numerous awards, including the NZSM Brass Player of the Year, National Brass Band Trombone Champion of New Zealand, and multiple prizes at the Gisborne International Brass Competition.

Now based in Sydney, Dale works extensively as a freelance trombonist, educator, and conductor. He is a former Sydney Symphony Orchestra Trombone Fellow and currently conducts Holroyd Brass Band and Willoughby Youth Brass Band, alongside a busy teaching and compositional practice focused on trombone, low brass, and ensemble development.
