Solitario is a work written for a Brass Band Cornet section, Flugel Horn, and a percussionist. The work’s title, meaning lonely, refers to the lack of the rest of the band that would normally accompany such a group of players.
The piece begins with an atmospheric opening, with a reflective soprano cornet cadenza. A broken chord leads into the rest of the work, which explores the contrasts and similarities between modern chamber music and brass band conventions, culminating in a idiomatic build up of Cornet runs before winding down back into an atmospheric ending.
Solitario was written to explore the possibilities of a fully extended Cornet section, and to give players who would normally be part of a larger section a individual voice.
